 Tasting Notes

The term "Tall Poppy" is a begrudging compliment to someone that is head and shoulders above the rest.  This particular bottling is the 11th vintage of Tall Poppy produced in 33 years of Yamhill Valley Vineyards winemaking.  The 2016 vintage is comprised of several blocks of the Pommard clone from our estate. Savor this special, age-worthy wine as our finest representation of YVV terroir: rich, dense, structured, yet soft and complex.

Black cherry on the nose followed by a sweet/savory palate; forest floor, smoked meats, chocolate, spice, black currant, and Bing cherry round out a rich, velvety texture.

VINEYARD

Established in 1983, Yamhill Valley Vineyards is the second oldest vineyard in the McMinnville AVA. We produce 100% estate grown wines from our 150-acre estate located in the Willamette Valley. Thanks to the geologic history and geographic location, our site is known for intense, enduring wines, grown with distinction. The 2016 Tall Poppy is comprised of the Pommard clone coming from four blocks within our estate: Old Pommard, Upper Morning Light, Barn, and Lakeview.

 VINTAGE

The 2016 growing season started early in spring and did not slow down, bringing us our earliest harvest on record. The summer was long and dry, yielding intense, beautiful fruit with a softer texture, more black fruit flavors and more intensity than usual. We make our picking decisions, not only on the chemistry numbers, but more importantly on flavor development and texture of the skins. The winemaker walks the blocks and tastes the fruit to look for signs of full maturation, specifically a development of black tea-like flavors and tannin that show by chewing the skins of the fruit and carefully assessing.

 WINEMAKING

Grapes were hand-picked and delivered to the crush pad where they were hand-sorted and de-stemmed. After a one-day cold soak they were inoculated and punched down daily. Once the tannins, color, acidity, and complex fruit flavors found their balance, the free run was removed, settled, and put to barrel. This wine aged in barrel for 16 months in 55% new French oak, picking up more layers of complexity and bold aromatics to accentuate the generous black fruit qualities.
